The main rule is to wear something you feel comfortable in, that gives you a full range of movement.
For girls, wear leggings or jazz pants if you have them. Otherwise a good start is some loose trousers. You can also wear a leotard from ballet or gymnastics, along with a full-movement skirt. If you are wearing a skirt with tights or socks, make sure it is not too tight.
For boys, try some jogging bottoms or wider-leg jazz pants. Jeans can sometimes feel too tight or the fabric can feel stiff.

The most important part, however, is wearing the right shoes!
Wear light and comfortable shoes for your first few lessons whilst you are getting used to the steps. You could wear Jazz shoes if you have them already. Try not to come wearing trainers, as they have too much grip. As you start to understand the basic steps of the dances, you may wish to purchase specialised Ballroom/Latin shoes. These have a suede sole to help control your grip around the floor. They have less grip than Jazz shoes so they will allow you to slide better!

We do not recommend ballet shoes for boys or girls. We love the suede sole, but there is no support for your heel. Also, the top part is soft. You might get cross with your partner if they tread on you, especially if you are wearing ballet shoes and they are wearing shoes with a harder sole!
